DStv Explora and Ultra Installation, common questions

What's the actual difference between an Explora and an Ultra?+
The Ultra is the newer box: it streams DStv apps and Showmax alongside satellite channels, and it needs an internet connection to do that. The Explora is satellite-focused with recording. If your internet at home is unreliable, the Ultra loses part of what you're paying for: worth thinking about before you choose.
Does the Ultra need WiFi to work at all?+
No: satellite channels work without internet. But the streaming apps, catch-up and Showmax all need a connection, and a weak signal in the lounge is the usual reason people feel the box is underperforming. If your WiFi doesn't reach the TV properly we can sort that at the same visit.
Can I keep my recordings if I upgrade?+
Recordings live on the drive inside the decoder, so they don't transfer to a new box. Watch anything you want to keep before we swap it over. We'll set up the new decoder, move your dish connection across and make sure everything is showing before we leave.
Will my existing dish work with an Ultra?+
Usually, yes, provided the dish is properly aligned and the LNB is in good shape. We check both as part of the install rather than assuming. If you're adding Extra View later, the LNB type matters more: we'll flag it on the day so you're not paying for a second call-out.
