DStv Reconnection vs New Installation: Which Do You Need?

12 Oct 2026 · 8 min read · DStv Wellington

Not sure if you need a DStv reconnection or a whole new installation? Here's how to tell, what each costs and what to check first.

Your TV went quiet after a few missed payments, or you've just bought a house in Wellington with an old dish already on the wall. Either way, the real question is the same: is this a DStv reconnection job, or do you need a brand new installation? The answer decides what you pay and who you call.

Quick answer: A DStv reconnection is mostly an account matter. You settle the balance, DStv switches your services back on, and the existing dish and decoder do the rest. You only need a new installation when there's no working dish, the bracket or cable has failed, or the setup was never yours to begin with.

What a DStv reconnection really means

Think of reconnection as switching the tap back on. The pipes are still there. Your dish, cable and decoder stay exactly where they are, and DStv simply sends the signal that lets your decoder show channels again.

DStv's own help pages say services come back automatically once your payment shows on the account, as long as the full amount is paid. That full amount can include a reconnection fee. You can read that wording on the DStv reconnection fees page.

The same applies if you paused the service yourself while away for a few months. Nothing on the roof has changed, so the account is the only thing to fix.

So in most cases nobody needs to climb a ladder. If the picture was fine before the account lapsed, it will usually be fine again.

When a new installation is the better call

A reconnection can't fix hardware that's missing or broken. If any of these sound familiar, you're really looking at a new DStv installation rather than a simple switch-on:

  • The dish was taken down when the last owners moved out.
  • The bracket has rusted, cracked or pulled out of the wall.
  • The cable has perished in the sun or been cut during building work.
  • You want an Explora or Explora Ultra, which needs a Smart LNB.
  • The decoder is so old that you'd rather replace it than keep nursing it along.

That last one is a judgement call. Our guide on whether to repair or upgrade an old decoder walks through the trade-offs.

Costs on each side of the line

On the account side, you pay whatever is outstanding plus any reconnection fee DStv adds. DStv explains the fee as covering the extra admin of processing late payments.

How much is the reconnection fee for DStv?

DStv's help pages explain why the fee exists but don't list a fixed figure there. The amount you owe shows on your own account, so sign in to the MyDStv app or dstv.com before you pay. That way you pay the full DStv reconnection fee in one go and avoid a second wait.

On the hardware side, prices are ours rather than DStv's. At the time of writing, a standard single-view installation usually budgets from around R850 to R1,400, and harder jobs such as an Explora with a Smart LNB or long cable runs from around R1,500 to R2,400. Ask our team for a current quote.

Our DStv installation cost guide breaks those numbers down further. We always quote before we drive out.

Wellington homes where the answer is less clear

Some properties sit in a grey area. A farmhouse in the Bovlei might have a perfectly good dish but 40 metres of tired cable between the roof and the lounge. The account can be paid up and the picture still won't return.

Older homes in Newton and around Dal Josafat often have joins and splitters hidden in the ceiling from earlier jobs. Hot Winelands summers dry out cable jackets, and winter rain finds the cracks.

Townhouse complexes in Hillcrest or on the road to Paarl are different again. Many run a shared dish, so a dead TV may be a fault on the building's system. Our communal DStv systems team looks after those. Homes near the Hawequa foothills can also lose part of the sky to the mountain, which matters if a dish was ever moved.

Good to know: Student digs and rentals change hands often. Before you pay to reconnect, make sure the decoder's smartcard is linked to your own DStv account, not to a previous tenant's.

Five checks before you book a DStv reconnection visit

  • Your account shows as paid in full, including any reconnection fee.
  • The decoder is switched on and sitting on a DStv channel.
  • You've tried re-authorising it through the MyDStv app or DStv's WhatsApp self-service.
  • You've noted the exact error code on screen, if there is one.
  • You've checked the decoder's signal screen for strength and quality.

If you're not sure what the numbers mean, here's how to check your signal strength safely from the couch.

Safety first: Don't climb onto the roof to look at the dish yourself. Leave ladders, brackets and LNB wiring to a technician.

What happens when we come out

If the account is sorted and there's still no picture, the problem is hardware. Here's how a typical visit runs:

  1. We read the signal on a proper meter at the decoder and at the dish.
  2. We check the bracket, LNB and connectors for rust, water and loose fittings.
  3. We trace the cable run and replace damaged sections.
  4. We realign the dish if it has shifted, using satellite dish alignment on a meter.
  5. We test every TV point with you before we leave.

Most people only need to pay up and wait for the signal. If that hasn't worked, our DStv reconnections and relocations service sorts the hardware side. Call or WhatsApp 079 754 5527, or send us a message and we'll tell you honestly which job you need.

Tell us what's on the screen, how long the service has been off and whether anything on the roof has changed. Those three answers usually tell us if it's a quick visit or a fresh start. You can also browse our DStv installation in Wellington services first.

DStv reconnection: FAQs

How long does DStv reconnection take after payment?

DStv says services reconnect automatically once your payment reflects on the account, provided the full amount is paid. Bank and retail payments can take a little while to show. Leave the decoder on a DStv channel, and if nothing happens, re-authorise it through the MyDStv app.

Is there a DStv reconnection fee if I only missed one month?

DStv may add a reconnection fee to cover the admin of a late payment. The amount owed appears on your own account, so check the MyDStv app or dstv.com before you pay. Paying the full balance at once avoids a delay.

Do I need a technician for a DStv reconnection in Wellington?

Usually not. If the dish, cable and decoder worked before the account lapsed, paying up is often enough. You need a technician in Wellington when the signal screen shows no signal or the dish, bracket or cable has been damaged.

Can I use the old dish at a house I've just bought?

Often, yes, if the dish points the right way and the bracket and cable are sound. A technician should test the signal and check for rust or perished cable first. If anything has failed, a new installation is usually the better value.

What happens if DStv is not paid?

Your services are suspended and channels stop showing, usually with an error message on screen. Your dish and decoder stay in place. Once the outstanding amount and any reconnection fee are paid, DStv switches the service back on.
