Comparing the DStv Explora Price Across Retailers

16 Oct 2026 · 8 min read · DStv Wellington

The same Explora can cost different amounts in two shops in one week. Here's how to compare offers on the full fitted total.

Shopping around for a decoder? The DStv Explora price can differ by hundreds of rand between two shops in the same week, and the cheapest sticker isn't always the cheapest result. Here's how we'd compare offers in Wellington so you know what you'll really pay once the box is working on your TV.

Quick answer: At the time of writing, DStv's 2026 promotions put the DStv Explora price from around R1,499, while retailers run their own specials that change weekly. Compare the total, not the box: add a Smart LNB, cabling and installation, plus the R125 monthly Access Fee. Ask our team for a current quote before you buy.

Why the DStv Explora price changes from shop to shop

Retailers buy stock at different times and set their own promotions. One store might drop its price for a month-end sale, while another bundles a voucher or keeps the old price on the shelf.

DStv also runs its own deals. Earlier in 2026, the Explora sold for R1,499 on promotion, down from R2,299. Those figures are a useful yardstick, but they aren't a promise of what any shop charges today.

So treat every price you see as a snapshot. Write it down with the date and the store, then compare like with like. For the fitting side of the sum, our guide to DStv installation cost shows what changes a quote.

Also check the box really says Explora. A single-view HD decoder can look similar on a crowded shelf, and it sold for far less on DStv's 2026 promotion, at R499. It's a fine box, but it can't record.

Online listings need the same care. Check who the seller is, what delivery to Wellington costs and whether the box is new and sealed.

Three routes to the DStv Explora price

There are three common ways to buy. Each one hands you something slightly different for your money.

Where you buyWhat you usually getWhat to watch for
Chain retailer (Pep, Game, Makro, Checkers, Incredible)The decoder in a box, sometimes on a specialDish, Smart LNB, cable and fitting are usually extra
DStv directThe decoder, with promotions that change through the yearCheck whether installation is included or sold as a separate option
Local installerA quote for the decoder fitted, tested and set upAsk for each item on the quote so you can compare it fairly

None of these is always cheapest. A shop special plus a separate install can beat a bundle, or the other way round. That's why the full total matters.

What the shelf price leaves out

A decoder on its own can't show a single channel. Before you compare offers, list the parts your home still needs.

A Smart LNB on the dish

Every Explora needs a Smart LNB, because it feeds several tuners at once. Retail is roughly R399 to R499. Our article on the Smart LNB price covers when an old LNB can't be reused.

Cable and the fitting

For an Explora with a Smart LNB, long cable runs or a difficult roof, we usually budget roughly R1,500 to R2,400. A neat Explora and Ultra installation includes the cabling, connectors, alignment and decoder setup.

The monthly side

The Explora is a PVR, so it carries the R125 per month Access Fee on top of your package. That's the same wherever you buy the box, so it won't change which shop wins.

How to compare the DStv Explora cost fairly

Use the same four-step sum for every offer. It takes five minutes and stops a cheap sticker from fooling you.

  1. Write down the box price. Note the store, the date and whether it's the Explora or the Explora Ultra.
  2. Add the dish parts. Include a Smart LNB, and a dish and bracket if you don't already have one.
  3. Add the installation. Get a written quote for your home, not a guess from the counter.
  4. Compare the totals. The lowest total is the real winner, not the lowest box price.

Done this way, the dstv explora cost from a shop and an installer quote finally sit side by side.

Technician tip: Keep your till slip and check the model on the box before you leave the shop. If the decoder turns out faulty, you will need that slip for any warranty claim.

Wellington homes that change the total

Two people can buy the same box at the same price and still pay very different amounts to get it working. Your property makes the difference.

  • Farms in Bovlei and Groenvallei. The dish may sit on a shed far from the house, which means long cable runs and more connectors.
  • Older homes in Newton and Hillcrest. Old cable often needs replacing, as it can lose too much signal for a Smart LNB.
  • Townhouse complexes. Many share one dish, so the Explora must be set up for the complex system. Our communal DStv installation team handles those.
  • Student flats near Mbekweni and town. Lease rules may limit where a dish can go, so ask the landlord first.

Hot summers also bake old cable on north-facing walls, and winter rain finds any loose connector. Both show up on the quote.

Explora or Ultra on the shop shelf

Many shops stock both. On DStv's 2026 promotion, the Explora Ultra sold for R2,999, about double the standard box.

The Ultra adds 4K and HDR, built-in WiFi, streaming apps and room for up to about 110 hours of recordings. If your TV isn't 4K, the standard Explora decoder price is usually the better buy. Our Explora vs Ultra comparison goes deeper into the choice.

Good to know: Already have an older decoder? It may be worth asking whether to repair or upgrade before you buy anything new.

Paying the DStv Explora price once, not twice

The most expensive mistake we see is a box bought on special that then needs a second trip. A missing Smart LNB, the wrong cable or a dish pointed at a tree all add cost after the fact.

  • Confirm your dish has a Smart LNB, or budget for one.
  • Check the cable from the dish to the TV is in good shape.
  • Make sure the dish has a clear view to the north-east.
  • Decide on XtraView now if a second TV is on the cards.

If a second room needs TV, our XtraView setup links it to the Explora on one subscription.

DStv Explora price: FAQs

Where is the cheapest DStv Explora price in South Africa?

There's no single cheapest shop, because retailers and DStv change their specials often. At the time of writing, DStv's 2026 promotion had the Explora from around R1,499. Compare the full cost with a Smart LNB and installation, then ask our team for a current quote.

Is the DStv Explora price at Game the same as at Pep?

Not necessarily. Each chain sets its own price and runs its own promotions, so the same box can cost different amounts in the same week. Check both on the day, and remember the box price usually excludes the dish, cabling and fitting.

How much is DStv Explora per month?

The decoder itself has no monthly charge once you've bought it. You pay your package, from R150 for Starter at the time of writing, plus the R125 Access Fee because the Explora is a PVR. Check current prices on dstv.com or the MyDStv app.

Can I buy an Explora at a shop and have you install it in Wellington?

Yes. Many Wellington clients buy the box on a special and book us for the fitting. We supply and fit the Smart LNB if needed, run the cabling, align the dish and set up the decoder, then test it with you.

Does a retail Explora come with a dish?

Usually not. Most shop boxes contain the decoder, a remote and the basic leads. The dish, bracket, Smart LNB, cable and installation are normally separate, so add them before you compare offers.
