Repair or Upgrade Old DStv Decoder? How to Decide

10 Oct 2026 · 9 min read · DStv Wellington

How to decide between repairing your decoder and upgrading it: end-of-support models, signal faults that look like box faults, and real upgrade costs.

Your decoder is freezing, rebooting or showing errors, and you're wondering whether it's worth fixing. Before you upgrade old DStv decoder hardware, it pays to know what is actually wrong. In many Wellington homes we visit, the box is fine and the trouble sits on the roof or in the walls.

Quick answer: Repair it if the decoder is a current model, the fault is clear and the signal checks out. Upgrade old DStv decoder models that DStv lists as end of support, or when you want recording, WiFi or XtraView. Always test the dish and cabling first, because a new box won't fix a bad signal.

First, is it really the decoder?

A lot of "dead decoder" calls turn out to be signal faults. A loose connector, a cracked cable or a dish nudged out of line all produce errors on screen that look like a broken box.

Wellington's older homes in Newton and Hillcrest often have long, tired cable runs from the dish to the lounge. Winter rain then finds every weak joint. If your picture breaks up mainly in bad weather, read about signal drops when it rains before you spend money on a box.

Simple ways to tell the difference:

  • Signal errors that come and go with weather usually point to the dish, LNB or cable.
  • A decoder that won't power on, or reboots over and over on a clear day, points to the box.
  • Freezing on some channels only can be either, so check signal quality first.
  • A remote that has stopped working is often just batteries.

Once you know the box is the problem, the choice gets simpler. Use this table as a rough guide for your own situation.

What end of support means for older boxes

DStv keeps some older models running but no longer looks after them. On its end of support decoder page, DStv says it cannot fix or replace these with the same model if they break. You also can't insure them, and they get no more software upgrades.

DStv also notes that the Dual View decoder and the SD PVR cannot receive its high band transmissions, even with a DStv Smart LNB. So if one of those sits under your TV, the decision is mostly made for you.

How to find your model

The model name or number is printed on the front or underneath the decoder. Write it down before you phone anyone, because it decides which options you have. Our guide to choosing a DStv decoder shows what each current model does.

When a repair makes sense

If you have a supported model and the signal tests fine, a repair can be the cheaper route. DStv's Express Agencies offer in-person decoder testing, repairs and sales. Take the decoder, power supply and remote with you.

Try these safe steps at home first:

  1. Switch the decoder off at the wall for a minute, then on again.
  2. Check the dish cable is firmly in the LNB IN port and the HDMI cable is seated at both ends.
  3. On an HD Single View decoder, press the blue DStv button, go to Settings, User Preferences, General, then Download latest software.
  4. Make sure your account is paid up in the MyDStv app.

Good to know: We don't open or repair decoders ourselves. Our DStv signal repairs cover the installation side: dish, LNB, cabling and setup. If the box is faulty, we'll tell you straight and point you to a DStv agency, so you don't pay for work that won't help.

Signs it's time to upgrade old DStv decoder models

Sometimes a repair is just money spent on a box that is near the end anyway. These signs say it's time for a new DStv decoder:

  • DStv lists your model as end of support.
  • Menus are slow and the guide takes ages to load.
  • You want to record matches or series and watch them later.
  • You'd like a second TV on the same account through XtraView.
  • The repair quote is close to the price of a new box.

Good news on packages: DStv's September 2026 change moved customers across automatically, and DStv says you don't need a new decoder for it. Upgrade for features, not because of the new line-up.

Which new DStv decoder fits a Wellington home

At the time of writing, DStv promotions from January to April 2026 listed the HD Single View decoder at R499, the Explora at R1,499 and the Explora Ultra at R2,999. Prices change and stores run their own specials, so compare on the day and ask our team for a current quote on fitting.

The HD decoder is a simple watch-only box. The Explora records and pauses live TV, and the Ultra adds 4K, built-in WiFi and streaming apps. Our comparison of Explora versus Ultra goes deeper, and both PVRs carry the R125 monthly Access Fee.

Farms and estates in Bovlei and Dal Josafat

An Explora needs a DStv Smart LNB, so moving up from an old single LNB setup means a change on the dish. On farms in the Hawequa foothills, the cable run to the house can be long, and the dish must still see the north-east sky. Our notes on line of sight in the Winelands explain why.

Townhouse complexes and student flats

DStv says its Smart LNB is not suitable for complexes and apartments. If your townhouse in Groenvallei or a student block shares a dish, ask about communal DStv installation before buying an Explora, as the shared system may need work.

Are old decoders worth anything?

Honestly, not much. Working end-of-support boxes have very little resale value, because DStv can't repair them and they miss newer services. A supported decoder in good shape may sell second-hand, but check the model first.

It's worth asking a DStv agency if any trade-in offer is running when you upgrade. Offers come and go, so don't count on one. If the box is dead, take it to an e-waste drop-off rather than the bin.

What it costs to upgrade an old DStv decoder

The decoder price usually excludes the dish, LNB, cabling and fitting. As a rough guide, a standard single-view installation budgets from around R850 to R1,400, while an Explora with a Smart LNB, long cable runs or a tricky roof runs roughly R1,500 to R2,400.

Those are ranges at the time of writing, and every home is different. We quote first, and our decoder installation and setup service covers alignment on a signal meter, setup and testing with you before we leave.

Safety first: Swapping an LNB means working on the dish, often on a roof or ladder. Please leave that to a technician, and never open a decoder or touch the LNB wiring yourself.

Upgrade old DStv decoder: FAQs

Is it cheaper to repair or upgrade an old DStv decoder?

It depends on the model. A supported decoder with a single fault can be cheaper to repair at a DStv agency. An end-of-support box can't be repaired by DStv, so upgrading is usually the only sensible option. Check the signal first, as many faults are not the decoder.

Can I upgrade my old DStv decoder myself?

You can buy a new HD decoder and plug it into a working single LNB setup. Moving to an Explora needs a DStv Smart LNB on the dish, which means roof work. That part is best left to a technician with a signal meter.

Are old DStv decoders worth anything?

Usually very little. End-of-support models can't be repaired or insured by DStv and get no software updates, so few buyers want them. Ask a DStv agency if a trade-in offer is running, and recycle dead boxes at an e-waste point.

Do I need a new DStv decoder for the new packages?

No. DStv says customers don't need a new decoder for the September 2026 package changes, and the move happens automatically. You would only upgrade for features such as recording, WiFi or XtraView, or because your box is end of support.

What is the latest DStv decoder?

At the time of writing, the top satellite decoder in the range is the Explora Ultra. It supports 4K and HDR, has built-in WiFi and streaming apps, and records up to about 110 hours. It needs a DStv Smart LNB on the dish.

Where can I get my decoder tested in Wellington?

DStv Express Agencies offer decoder testing and repairs, and you can find one on dstv.com. For the dish, LNB and cabling side, a local technician in Wellington can test the signal at your home and tell you whether the box is really at fault.
